AMI Canada - Board of Directors 2017 - 2018

AMI (Canada) is guided by a Board of Directors comprised of AMI Teacher Trainers, AMI teachers, school owners and other professionals across Canada. The Board provides leadership and guidance for the work and initiatives of AMI (Canada). Day to day operations are managed by an Executive Director.

Sandra Girlato - President

Sandra Girlato holds a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology, English and fine art history from the University of Toronto, a Master’s Degree in Education from Loyola College, as well as an AMI diploma at the Primary level. Sandra worked with children 3 to 6 in a Montessori Casa prepared environment for several years. She is currently the Director of Training of the Foundation for Montessori Education in Toronto, a past member of the AMI Scientific Pedagogical, Materials and Translation Committees, an AMI examiner, as well as a consultant, lecturer and parent educator. Sandra was trained by Renilde Montessori.

Felix Bednarski - Treasurer & Secretary

Felix Bednarski has an M.A. in Architecture from Warsaw Technical University in Poland. He came to Canada in 1977. In 1987, he and his wife Amalia Molly Galle founded Humberside Montessori School, which now welcomes 160 children (ages 3-12) attending primary and elementary classes. He obtained his AMI Primary diploma in 1995 in Toronto under supervision of Mrs. Renilde Montessori. Finally, as a father of two grown-up daughters, he has completed a full cycle and has gained experience in all planes of development.

Lynn Woodward

Lynn Woodward holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Waterloo, a diploma in Applied Photography from Sheridan College, and an AMI diploma at the Primary level. Lynn worked with children 3 to 6 in a Montessori Casa prepared environmnet. She is currently an AMI Trainer and the administrator at FME, and is a national examiner, consultant, lecturer and parent educator. Lynn was trained by Renilde Montessori.

J. Michael Robinson

Michael Robinson is a retired lawyer from Toronto where he practiced international business law for over 50 years. His children attended an AMI Montessori school until high school and all his grandchildren are currently in the casa program at a Toronto AMI school.

James Brand

Since receiving his AMI primary diploma in 1984, Jim Brand has been a Montessori educator and school administrator. He was a founding member of the Canadian Council of Montessori Administrators, serving as that organisation’s chair for five years, and was a member of the founding board of the Montessori Society of Canada. During his more than thirty years as head of school at Maria Montessori School in Toronto, Jim has remained an active member of the Montessori community. He has been involved with numerous Montessori projects and initiatives and is currently the chair of AMI (Canada)’s Government Liaison Committee.

Anne E. Laws - Executive Director

Anne graduated from Queen's University with a B.A. and a B.Ed. and completed her AMI Primary diploma in Toronto in 1984. After working in the classroom for several years, she went on to complete a M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto (1989). Anne has worked as a Directress and Principal in various Montessori schools in Toronto and Ottawa. While living in Vancouver, she began the Trainer of Trainers' Programme at the Montessori Training Centre of BC and is now an Auxiliary Trainer for the AMI and a trained AMI Primary Consultant. She continues to work as a Consultant, Lecturer and National Examiner. She was a founding member of the Montessori Society of Canada and served for many years as Editor of the MSC News.
